A common interest in paintball

ONE is a budding golfer; the other a junior shooter while the third is a student. The trio of Shahreel Eqbal, Rehana Emylla and Kyrel Emran along with elder brother Dzulhallee, a former national junior sprinter, have found a common interest in paintball.

The foursome are children of former international Datuk Paduka Mumtaz Jaafar, who won the women’s 100m gold medal in the Manila SEA Games in 1981, and sports official Dom Amy Hussain.

Shahreel, the golfer in the family with a handicap of three, said paintball had brought the family together and they have become closer after getting involved in the game in April this year.

“Each are active in different sport activities. So, it was difficult for us to meet regularly. But since we started being active in paintball, we have been spending a lot of time together.

“We have also convinced our cousins to gather on weekends for regular paintball activities,” 20-year-old Shahreel, a Pre U student at the Bukit Jalil Sports School, said.

Rehana is a promising shooter (air pistol) and has been selected to represent Selangor at next year’s Sukma in Terengganu while Kyrel is more inclined to books. Both Rehana and Kyrel are students of SMK Damansara Utama. Rehana is in Form Five while Kyrel is in Form One.

Shahreel said their affair with paintball started when he had to pick up his brother – Dzulhallee - after a paintball training session.

“It was a weekend. I was quite free. Along with Rehana and Krel, we went to fetch my brother. We watched all the action for a short while. It was quite interesting with all the shooting. My brother also encouraged us to join his training sessions.

“It was fun and enjoyable. More importantly, we were spending more time as a family,” said Shahreel.

It did not take long for Shahreel and his siblings to master the basics in paintball. Together with several other paintball players, they formed a team – Zealous – and joined the National Paintball League. Playing in Division Three, Zealous made their presence felt by qualifying for the quarterfinals.

Zealous second competition was the Nemesis X Tour in Kuantan where they finished second. In the Junior Sports Carnival held in Bukit Jalil, Zealous became the champions.

Zealous also made their presence felt in Division Three of the Paintball Asia League series. In the Werdnahol-sponsored division, Zealous finished second in the first leg and champion in the second leg. This weekend, Shahreel and his siblings will be part of Zealous taking part in the third leg in Manila, the Philippines.

Shahreel said they were looking at a podium finish in Manila.

“We believe the competition will be tough. We are not aware of the foreign challenge. But we have a bright chance of finishing among the top three. We also feel that it is a realistic target,” said Shahreel.

Though, both Shahreel and Rehana are active in paintball, they don’t have plans to quit golf or shooting. Both continue their training programmes in golf and shooting. Shahreel trains at the range about four days week and also goes on the course.

Rehana, as a member of the Selangor junior squad, goes to the shooting range thrice a week.

But on weekends, they get together and head to the paintball course.

Paintball is currently the 3rd most popular Extreme Sport in the World, with 12 Million followers. In 15 short years, the sport of paintball has become recognized as one of the world's most exciting outdoor participation sports. Paintball is played in over 40 countries by millions of men and women of all ages and lifestyles.

E-bay reports more searches for paintball items than for any other sports listing, with spending on equipment and paraphernalia topping $225 Million annually. Whether homemakers or high-school students, professionals or retirees; all paintball players share in common a love for adventure and a strong competitive spirit.

Capture the Flag

Paintball is a combination of the childhood games "tag" and "hide & seek," but is much more challenging and sophisticated. Although there are many different game formats, typically a group of players will divide into two teams to play "capture

the flag." The number of players on each team in the NPL can vary, but there are only 5 players allowed on each side of the field.

The object of the game is to go out and capture the oth

er team's flag while protecting your own. While you are trying to capture a flag, you also try to eliminate opposing players by tagging them with a paintball expelled from a special airgun called a "marker." Games run a maximum of 5 minutes.

Between games, players take a break to check their equipment, get more paintballs and have a snack or soda while they share stories about the thr

ills of victory and the usually funny agonies of defeat. Win or lose, everyone has a good time and there's usually the next game waiting for you.

Paintballs

A paintball is a round, thin-skinned gelatin capsule with colored liquid inside it. Paintballs are similar to large round vitamin capsules or bath oil beads. The fill inside paintballs is non-toxic, non-caustic, water-soluable and biodegradable. It

rinses out of clothing and off skin with mild soap and water and are even edible, although we don't recommend it!

Paintballs come in a rainbow of bright colors: blue, pink, white, orange, yellow and more. When a paintball tags a player, the thin

gelatin skin splits open, and the liquid inside leaves a bright "paint" mark. A player who is marked is eliminated from the game.

Markers

Paintguns, also called "markers," co

me in a variety of shapes and styles. They may be powered by carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen (N2) or compressed air. Many have power systems that use large refillable cylinders called "tanks" or "bottles" that give hundreds of shots before needing to be refilled. Some use small 12 gram CO2 powerlets as their power source, each powerlet being good for 15 to 30 shots.

With pump-action markers (pump guns), each time you want to shoot a paintball you first cock the marker by using a

pump, then you squeeze the trigger to shoot the paintball; you must recock the marker before you can shoot again. Stockguns, using 12-grams, have the most basic pump gun configuration (though they are becoming ever-more high-tech within the constraints of the configuration) and stock gun play is in a class of its own.

With semi-automatic markers, the first time you want to shoot you must cock the marker (usually by pulling back a cocking knob or handle), but after yo

u shoot the first paintball the marker's action will recock the marker for you; you simply squeeze the trigger each time you want to shoot a paintball.

With a full-auto marker, when you squeeze the trigger for the first time, the 'gun will begin to shoot paintballs and will keep on shooting paintballs as long as you keep squeezing the trigger; when you release the trigger, the 'gun will stop shooting.

Markers range from simple to sophisticated, but what they all share in common is a limitation on their power and range. The international safety l

imit on the speed (measured in feet per second, "FPS") at which a marker shoots a paintball is 300 fps. A chronograph is used to test for speed limits, and all markers can be adjusted to shoot under the speed limit. A marker's range is limited, too; even shooting 300 fps, at maximum elevation with barrel pointed up into the air, a marker can lob a paintball only about 50 yards.

Safety

For safety, paintball players always must wear goggles specifically designed for paintball to protect their eyes. Goggles must be worn during a game and at all times when a person is in an area where shooting is permitted, such as the target range or chronograph area.

rywhere, and should be worn regardless. A barrel plug is inserted into the barrel of the marker when not in use. Paintball is a very safe sport as long as safety rules are followed. Insurance statistics have shown that paintball is safer than golf, jogging, tennis, swimming and many other sports.

Referees on the field enforce safety and game rules. No physical contact is permitted in the game, and players are ejected from games or

the play site for breaking safety or playing rules. Fields have boundaries, and a player who steps outside a field's boundary is eliminated from that game.

The Game

Paintball is a sport played by people from all professions

and lifestyles. It is a sport where women and men compete equally, and where age is not dominated by youth. Like a game of chess, being able to think quickly and decisively is what makes you a star in paintball. Intelligence and determination, not merely strength, speed or agility, are key to success in the sport.

Paintball is a character-building sport. Players learn about teamwork, gain self-confidence and develop leadership abilities while having fun and getting welcome stress-relief. Increasingly, corporations are finding the benefits of having their staff and management participate in paintball games.

Paintball is an exciting sport, and above all paintball is fun! It's a chance to shake off your day-to-day responsibilities and rekindle your spirit of adventure. When the adrenaline starts pumping, you can't help but love the thrill of the game!

Bushwackers edition SL66 EGO

This is the first true “Pro” Edition Ego. It has been designed from the ground up to be the lightest, tightest Ego ever produced. This is the Integra Type R or M3CSL equivalent of the Ego 06, where almost every component has been optimized for performance, weight, balance and size.
The attention to detail is unparalleled on any previous Ego. For example, the front regulator mount is 2mm smaller in diameter, just to shave off extra grams. The in-line regulator is devoid of sculpted finger grooves in order to make the body as thin as possible and yet retain structural integrity. The new swivel in-line reg now has a shorter bottom piece in order to have a longer and larger down-stream regulated volume without increasing weight.

On the frame, the rail has been cut down to the bare minimum; to reduce overall gun height, as well as save weight. The new On/Off purge system now mounts so that it butts right up to the bottom of the grips. The frame also shaves off the weight by reducing the thickness of the guard, reducing the profiling of the snatch grip area, removing more metal from inside the upper section of the trigger guard, removing metal from the inside of the frame where it wasn’t necessary, and also deleting the magnetic return mechanism, as the choice of the Pros is spring only trigger return. A larger, flatter trigger makes the marker more responsive by being lighter, with a profile that makes it more comfortable to shoot with more varied hand positions and placements.

Inside the frame there is the Ego 6 circuit board with 3 ramp modes, capped and un-capped semi, as well as an uncapped training mode. The new Ego 6 debounce settings make the marker quicker to shoot and easier to set up than any of the 2005 software versions.

The body is machined all over using complex 3D surface machining to get the weight down to the bare minimum, yet retain the classic flowing Eclipse lines. This is by-far the lightest body Eclipse has created - for any marker.

A new bolt system incorporating no retaining screw, an aluminium plunger, smaller spring and a stainless pin reduces mass in both the cycling system and the overall marker, is open-faced and has a slotted inlet for high flow. It helps reduce cyclic kick and blends seamlessly with the read of the gun. No protruding bolt parts make the sides of the marker easier to clean after a side-shot.

The new C-Lever clamping feed, Bushwacker machined logo, wasted-down front cap, 2-piece shaft Barrel round out this complete package.Crucially the SL66 is lighter than a stock Ego 6, and 0.2” shorter in height.

Safety!

Safety is the most boring thing to talk about, but it is too huge to ignore. You can learn about safety on your own or you can be taught, but ignoring it can be real painful to say the least.

-Two main areas that must be focused on are the air system and the gun itself. Paintball guns are not toys. You can even read that statement on every gun on the market. It should be treated with the same respect and care as a real fire arm. I know you are trying to talk your mom into letting you get a “Marker”, but this safety tip may not help your cause.

- Your gun is always loaded. YOUR GUN IS ALWAYS LOADED! I wrote it twice because the most used excuse for accidental shootings is, “I did not think it was loaded”. This means, keep your gun aimed down to the ground, your finger off the trigger, and keep your barrel sock on at all times when not playing. Even in pro events now, players are only permitted to take their barrel socks off 10 seconds before the game starts.- Now, we have all heard by now, how dangerous high pressure air can be. Never work on your own air system. If you are having trouble with your air system, have an expert at your local paintball store look at it. Always have certified tech work on your equipment. You can even learn how to do the maintenance and basic safety inspections for both your marker and air system. Ask to be shown the best ways from your local store.

- My last safety tip is to not eat paintballs! They taste bad and can cause an upset stomach. If you are hungry, please eat an apple. If you saw what these gelatin paintballs are made from, you might change your mind. Plus, you may stain the toilet bowl. Just kidding :)

The Super 5 Malaysia Series of Paintball is made up of five events held across Malaysia each year, with the Grand Season Finale as the final event of the season.

Over a hundred teams from all over Malaysia compete in each event from the local walk-on level to the highly trained professional level. Thousands of dollars in cash prizes are given away to event champions throughout the tour, but only one team can take home the title of the 2007 NPL Super 5 Malaysian Series Champion.
